How to Get More Google Reviews as a Contractor
The short answer
Ask every customer, right after the job, with a direct link, then follow up once or twice. Don't offer anything in exchange, don't ask for five stars, and don't pick and choose who gets asked. That's the whole system. Most contractors just don't do it consistently.
When to ask
The best moment is the final walkthrough, when the customer is looking at the finished job and saying thanks. Ask in person: "It would really help us if you left a quick Google review. I'll text you the link." Then send the text before you leave the driveway, or the same evening at the latest.
Waiting a week is where reviews die. The happy feeling fades and the text gets buried.
Get your direct review link
Google Business Profile lets you share a link that opens the review box for your business. Google's help page on tips to get more reviews explains where to find it. Save it somewhere you can paste it in two taps, or let a system send it for you.
Text templates by trade
Copy these, then make them sound like you:
- Roofing. "Thanks again for trusting us with the roof, Sarah. If you have a minute, a Google review really helps a small roofing company like ours: [link]"
- HVAC. "Glad the new furnace is running. If you have a sec, we'd love a Google review about how the install went: [link]"
- Landscaping. "Hope you're enjoying the new patio! Would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? It helps other homeowners find us: [link]"
- Pest control. "Thanks for having us out. Feel free to keep it short and skip any details you'd rather not share. A Google review helps us a lot: [link]"
- Renovation. "It was great working on your basement. If you're up for it, an honest Google review would mean a lot: [link]"
Notice what's missing: no "please give us 5 stars", no "only if you were happy". Just a simple, honest ask.
Following up without being annoying
Plenty of people mean to leave a review and forget. One or two polite reminders a few days apart is fine. After that, let it go. WorkWon's review system sends no more than 4 reminders, and most reviews come in well before that.
What Google doesn't allow
Google's policy for reviews on Maps is clear on a few points that trip up contractors:
- No incentives. No discounts, gift cards or entries into a draw in exchange for a review.
- No review gating. You can't discourage negative reviews or ask only the customers you think are happy.
- No fake or bought reviews, including reviews from friends and family pretending to be customers.
- No reviewing yourself or having staff review the business.
Breaking the rules can get reviews removed and your profile restricted. It's not worth it, and a steady stream of honest reviews beats a suspicious burst every time.
Replying to reviews, including the bad ones
Reply to every review. For a good one, thank them by name and mention the job ("Glad the new eavestroughs held up in that storm"). For a bad one, stay calm, acknowledge the problem, and offer to fix it offline. Future customers know nobody is perfect. They're watching how you handle it.
Making it automatic
The hard part isn't knowing what to do. It's remembering to do it after every job when you're tired and already thinking about tomorrow. WorkWon's 5-Star Review Funnel sends every finished customer a review request, with up to 4 reminders, so nobody gets skipped and nobody gets pestered.
It works for every trade we build for, from general contractors and renovators to landscapers and pest control companies. Reviews are only one part of getting found, so see how contractors get leads for the rest, or our page on contractor marketing in Toronto.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I ask a customer for a Google review?
In person at the final walkthrough, then by text the same day with your direct review link. Keep it short and make it easy.
Can I offer a discount or gift card for a review?
No. Google's policy doesn't allow incentives for reviews, and breaking it can get reviews removed.
Can I only send review links to my happy customers?
No. Selectively asking only satisfied customers is called review gating, and Google's policy prohibits it. Ask every customer the same way.
How many reminders are OK?
One or two friendly reminders is normal. WorkWon's review system stops after 4 at most.
Should I reply to every review?
Yes, good and bad. Google's own tips encourage replying, and future customers read your replies as closely as the reviews.
